7:00pm - 9:00pm
From Diapers to Underwear: Understanding and Supporting the Toilet Training Process
One child is worried about what will happen when it is flushed away, another child refuses to give-up her pull-ups and another child simply shows no interest in toilet training despite your best efforts. The myriad of issues that arise in regard to toilet learning test the skill and patience of the best of us!
In this workshop participants will explore why learning to use the toilet is such a huge milestone for children, strategies for responding to children who experience toilet learning challenges, steps to take to guide your child to successfully using the toilet on their own, and common pitfalls to avoid. Some of the concepts we will explore include signs of readiness, how to start the process, daytime vs. nighttime training, the pros and cons of using rewards, withholding, and how to respond if it turns into a power struggle. Discussion about the plethora of toilet learning products on the market will aid in your decision about which items are the right fit for you and your child.

Transition to Kindergarten Lecturer: Sara Lane
Come and learn about the exciting world of kindergarten.
Moving from preschool to kindergarten can cause anxiety
for both parents and children. This workshop will help you and your pre-schooler make a smooth transition to kindergarten. Some of the frequently asked questions that will be addressed include: What will a typical day be like? How can I make my child more comfortable about his/her new "big kid school?" What questions should I ask school personnel? What do I do if my child is very anxious? And, what do I need to know about sending my child on the bus? As an additional resource, a list of children's books focused on starting school will be provided.
Tuesday, June 10, 2008 ”Dazed and Confused”
Saving for College & the 529 Plan Lecturer: Jim Hart
School Daze: It’s that perplexing state of mind that parents of young children experience in planning for education. For parents faced with the rising costs of daily living and trying to set aside funds for their “golden years”, thinking of funding higher education can leave them dazed and confused. The bottom line is that every dollar saved now is one you won’t have to search for when your child goes off to college. Jim’s seminar can help you quantify your education goals, and coordinate those plans with retirement and other priorities for your young family.
Jim Hart is an attorney and a principal of The Lyons Company. He graduated cum laude from Clark University with a B.A. in Economics, and received his J.D. degree from Pepperdine University School of Law with a concentration in tax and estate planning. Jim and his wife, Kerry (former LPPTA Board member) live in Lexington where they are raising their three children.
